Who would have thought that the city where were homosexual debauchery since many years ago now be the seat of the Catholic Church? In the passing of time, gays have established their lavender mark on The Eternal City - from Michelangelo's extravagant Sistine Chapel to Emperor Hadrian's statues of his buff lover Antinous.
There is much information for gay and lesbians living in or visiting Italy. In the year of 1889 the homosexuality has been legal in Italy and the age of consent is 14, as it is for heterosexuals.
The physical affection in public areas is not well seen and not recommended. While equal sex unions are not legal, there are some towns which permit a civil ceremony can be held although it has no legal standing.
Nowadays, travelers may be impressed to find Rome as comparatively closeted as it is; particularly compared to the rather out scene way north in Milan. Sure, attractive gladiators in skirts can offer a photo in front of the Coliseum, and naked male imagery seems to decorate every fountain, but Rome's bars take a detective to find for the most part, appearing more as speakeasies than proud out establishments.
